I read and hear a lot of words such as green economy, sustainability, circular economy but what does it really mean?


I wanted to walk the talk. How do I create a product that fits into the criteria?. What does it take to bring a product from its concept to the finishing line? Well, 1 year with the help of incredible partners.

The bee economy



Why did I choose the honey?



Sometimes I do understand why we are in this situation, but then I still cannot understand that the purpose behind it is to put profit before people and the planet. Let me explain.


Did you know that 7 out of 20,000 bee species produce honey? The other 19,993 species are pollinators. We need as many as possible, as they contribute between $235 and $577 billion worth of our annual global food production.


Pesticides, climate change, and other insects destroy the bees. This results in humans transporting the bees where the crops are, or, in extreme cases, humans pollinating the trees and doing the work of the bees. Honey is in high demand, and because there is more demand than supply, 30% of it is fake and circulating in our stores. Cheap and available, this destroys the nutritional reputation of the honey, and beekeepers cannot compete with the fake honey price. This causes them to abandon beekeeping.


This is a deviation from the normal, natural order.



Let's talk packaging





Post-pandemic, Russia invades Ukraine, causing food insecurity and cause an energy crisis. Manufacturing glass jars are highly energy-consuming and hence not feasible. Some of the manufacturers have already shifted from glass jars to plastic bottles to reduce the price of honey packaging; the trend is increasing today. We are facing a conundrum, while we are trying to reduce the use of straws by searching for substitutes, we find manufacturers producing honey-packed into plastic straws! Amazing don't you think? But we remain optimistic and going strong.

Discussing with like-minded people.



I have always been fascinated by Bhutan. Not only by the fact that they are able to achieve the status as a negative carbon country, but what convinced me was the people.

For 14 months, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has been travelling by foot, car and horse to remote hamlets to oversee measures to protect his tiny kingdom of 700,000 from the coronavirus outbreak. Hon. Nima, a parliamentarian of the country shared with me pictures where his constituency came together to cook food for the people. He also shared with me that premium honey production is a community matter.



Beekeepers and their future.





I found out that in Asia, institutions and non-profit organisations are training beekeepers to become more sustainable and produce better-quality honey. The results are quite positive, as the beekeepers could earn more money from their work. This allows them to have a better livelihood and provide their children with education so they stand a chance to have better futures.


Beekeeping has helped to fix a fair bit of our damaged environment. The crops are growing better. Nature is slowly being restored. Preserving people and the planet means balancing what we need to live with what we need to exist.



Walk the talk





In my product innovation before I incorporate and use any components, it has to answer one simple question: Does it benefit the people and the planet? I had one simple objective: making honey portable and consumption sustainable.


After a year of research and development, we decided to encapsulate honey in a seaweed membrane called the "Mipette,“ packed into a recyclable and biodegradable box. The Mipette is 100% edible, compostable, and biodegradable, with a shelf life of 2 years.

Am I a social entrepreneur?





I could have just stopped at buying and selling honey that are geographically identified and controlled. But I felt a sense of incompleteness considering the highly valued global bee economy. After much thought, I have made 2 decisions. The first is that I would buy the honey at a fair price and the second is to create a beekeeper development fund to help empower and enlarge the beekeeping communities. This way I have purchased responsibly, and I get to give back 10% of my profits to the help empower the beekeeping communities.


So does this make me a social entrepreneur? I let you answer the question.
